Be Nice

I thought I’d take a moment today to talk about my least favorite aspect of the internet: trolls.

I hate them. I hate that they feel that they can get away with saying hurtful things to strangers because they’re anonymous. I hate that there’s rarely any consequence for trolling.

Some people may say I’m being too sensitive. I don’t believe there’s such a thing as being too sensitive. What’s so wrong about feeling things deeply? Sure I get hurt, but I also feel deeply all the good things in life.

I just wish that people would consider the impact of what they’re saying before they push the post button. Or maybe they do? I can’t pretend to know the psychology behind the internet troll. I don’t understand the impulse to write hurtful, hateful, vitriolic things about people you’ve never met. I’d much rather put good energy out into the world.

But the fact remains that internet trolls do exist and in my opinion the worst thing about them is not what they say, but the fact that much of the time it’s anonymous. That says to me that they know what they’re writing is wrong, but they write it anyway because no one will ever know it was them. To me that is the worst kind of cowardice.

Thank you for reading.
