April Postmortem

Continuing my new tradition of keeping track of my goals from month to month (we’ll see how long I can keep this up), it’s time to see how April went and what my plans for May are.

Before I get down into the nitty-gritty, I know that I didn’t achieve as much as I did in March and that’s fine. April was an insane month, and I set pretty high goals for myself. Next time, I’ll try to set more manageable goals.

How’d I do?

1.) I wanted to revise my completed manuscript and get it ready to submit to my critique group. I didn’t do this. In fact, I decided not to do this following the Futurescapes Workshop where I realized that I wanted to do more than a quick revision. So, for now, I’m going to be focusing on a different project while letting this one ruminate in the back of my mind. I’ll pull it out again in a couple months for revision and then send it on to my group, but I need time to process what I’m going to do with it.

2.) I successfully read and critiqued all of my fellow writer’s work in advance of Futurescapes. In fact, I specifically gave myself one day to read and respond to each piece, and I successfully stuck to that goal. Also for Futurescapes, I wanted to finalize my query letter and synopsis which I did in advance of the workshop. Overall, I’m proud of how well I managed my time while preparing for Futurescapes and hope I can repeat the process when getting ready for future workshops.

3.) I’d hoped to get some band business done, prepping Kickstarter materials and planning for our CD release. Between travel and Futurescapes this fell by the wayside, but that’s okay because I still have plenty of time in May to work on getting things ready for a June Kickstarter launch and CD release.

4.) I made it back to Maine! My travel went smoothly (eerily so), and I took two weeks to sleep and recover and reacclimatize to my home. Lots of dog cuddles were had, and lots of wool sweaters were worn. Also, the person has decided he’s coming out here in June so we won’t be going six months without seeing each other!

Okay, May, Bring it on!

1.) The Band! We’ve already started rehearsals to get back in the groove (haha! music pun), and things are going well. Now we’re getting into Kickstarter prep territory, where I’ll be writing copy for the Kickstarter in addition to a press release and other materials for the project.

2.) New Project! I’m going to work on drafting something I started in February and was having a lot of fun with. I’ve been holding it hostage from myself for the last two months to force myself to finish my last project. Now that that project in on hiatus for a couple months, I can start working on this one. My goal for this month is to get the first third written in addition to working on some worldbuilding and research.

3.) YouTube Channel launch. I’ve been thinking about doing a book review channel on YouTube for awhile, and I’ve decided it’s time to just sit down and do it. I’m going to aim to get at least the first episode, if not more, posted this month.

4.) Play banjo. I bought a banjo back in September 2016 and have barely played it. I signed up to attend Banjo Camp North later this month because I really want to play this instrument. I’m going to try to get into the habit of playing banjo every day.

Thank you for reading.
